Fulvio Attinà

FULVIO ATTINA' is Emeritus Professor of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Catania, Department of Political and Social Sciences. He holds the Jean Monnet Chair Ad Personam (since 2012) and is the Director of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence "EuroMed" (since 1998). He has been the Director of the Department of Political Studies (1991-97); the Chair of the BA (Laurea) Course in "Politics and International Relations" (2001-04); the Chair of the MA (Laurea Magistrale) Course in "European Union Governance and International Politics" (2004-2010) and in "Global Politics and Euro-Mediterranean Relations" (2011-2014); the Director of the PhD Course in International Relations (1995-2002) and of the International PhD Program on “Global Politics and European Integration” (2008-2011).
Chair of the Italian Association of Political Science in 2005-07, he has served in the governing bodies of professional associations like SISP (Italian Association of Political Science) from 1998, AUSE (Italian University Association for European Studies) from 1988-1996, ECPR (European Consortium for Political Research) from 2000-2006, and ISA (International Studies Association) from 1999-2001.
He taught at foreign universities like the Columbia University, New York University, University of Tampere, ITAM of Ciudad de Mexico, National University of the Urals at Ekaterinburg, University of Karachi, Shandong University at Jinan, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences of Beijing, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Autonomous University of Barcelona, University of Krakow, Universidad Tecnica de Lisboa, Univeristy of Macau, Metropolitan University Prague.
International conflict, foreign policy, and the EU political system with emphasis on the political parties in the European Parliament were the themes of his early research programmes. Later, his research work was on the world political institutions, regional security systems, peacekeeping and multilateral security, systemic crises and policies of emergency, relief and reconstruction. In recent past years, he researched on the migration crisis. In 2015-2017, he acted as the local team leader of the Horizon 2020 project “TransCrisis. Enhancing the EU's Transboundary Crisis Management Capacities: Strategies for Multi-Level Leadership”, and as the principal investigator of the University of Catania Research Project FIR 2014 on “Mare Nostrum: Military Humanitarian Operations at a Crossroad?” (2015-2016). Presently, he researches on the current world order transition.
In English, he is the author of The Global Political System, London, Palgrave, 2011 (previous versions published in Italy in 1999 and 2003, Spain in 2001, and Russia in 2002), the editor of The Politics and Policies of Relief, Aid and Reconstruction. Contrasting approaches to disasters and emergencies, Palgrave, 2012, and the co-editor of Multilateral Security and ESDP Operations, Farnham, Ashgate, 2010, and The Barcelona Process and Euro-Mediterranean issues from Stuttgard to Marseille, Milano, Giuffrè, 2001.
