CURRICULUM

The TEMA+ curriculum is divided into two parts: a common study core of foundational and methodological courses on one hand, and specialised and research courses on the other hand.
The student is required to study at least at two partner universities, with a common core Semester 1 at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Budapest and with a specialised mobility track at the four partner universities – École des Hautes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris, University of Catania (UNICT), Charles University (CUNI), Prague and Université Laval (UL), Québec during the following semesters (Semester 2-3-4).

The main academic subjects on which the TEMA+ curriculum is built are:
Cultural Heritage, European Heritage, Historic Urban Landscape, Urban Studies, Urban Anthropology, Ethnology, European History, European Integration, EU/European Policy-Making, Regional, National, and European Identity, Urban and Regional Development.

Within the curriculum these various subjects are first of all represented in the TEMA+ seminar that all five partner universities are organizing during the first, second and the third semester, creating a joint element within the TEMA+ curriculum. A solid knowledge of methods and scientific analysis has always been a predominant requirement in the programme, and all semesters at all five partner universities contain a methodology seminar. These seminars are dedicated to the high-level appropriation of various social-scientific research methods and to acquiring of excellent (historiographical and social-scientific) academic writing skills.

Besides these two seminars, the academic subjects at each partner institution may vary, according to the university’s own academic profile and strengths.

Mobilities after the first common semester spent at ELTE, will be divided into practice and theory based tracks, so students who are more involved in practical and professional topics of heritage and identity would choose between UNICT, CUNI and UL, while those who aspire further academic studies would be advised to study at EHESS for Semester 2 and 3.

Semester 1 (Core Semester)

• at ELTE, TEMA+ programme offers on the history, categories and national, European and global levels of institutionalization of cultural heritage, as well as a course on the concepts of culture itself, in order to put the phenomenon of European Heritage within a broader theoretical frame. The first common semester comprises “Non-academic Fridays”, during which students can attend specifically organized workshops and trainings, provided by the associated members or other non-academic partner organizations. Internships are possible to do related to European and World Heritage Sites (at Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music and the Hungarian National Commission for UNESCO).

Semester 2 and 3

• at UNICT, the TEMA+ programme offers seminars that put the question of heritage and territorial identity in the very pertinent context of the Euro-Mediterranean region, highlighting its importance as a frontier and as a current gate between Europe for an increasing number of refugees and immigrants. UNICT offers courses on regional-territorial identity and UNESCO policies. Internships are possible to do related to technologies and promotion of Cultural Heritage (at Associazione Officine Culturali, Parco dell’Etna or at the City of Catania).

 

• at CUNI, the TEMA+ programme is embedded at the Seminar of General and Comparative History, approaches the common themes from a comparative as well as a European historical point of view. CUNI offers seminars about politics of heritage, architectural and urban heritage and history of European culture and society, in order to get a broader frame of understanding. Internships are possible to do related to heritage tourism and also to scientific research in general (at CEFRES and Czech Tourism Institute).

 

• at EHESS, the TEMA+ programme corresponds to a pre-doctoral training, and therefore has an even stronger emphasis on methodology and the acquirement of excellent academic research. EHESS offers wide range of courses on cities and urban heritage (with the development of the notion of Historic Urban Landscape), by comparing European and non-European examples. Internships are possible to do related to European and World Heritage (at UNESCO World Heritage Center, Europe and North-America Unit, Paris).

 

• at UL, the TEMA+ programme focuses on innovative approaches to the safeguarding, the dissemination and the management of cultural heritage, more particularly of intangible cultural heritage. UL offer courses on the interpretation of heritage in museum exhibits, heritage sites, use of digital technologies, mediating processes, cultural property rights, sustainable tourism and training in the use of digital technologies in the safeguarding, archiving, valorization and on-line multimedia dissemination of heritage. Internships at the Organization of World Heritage Cities (Headquarters in Quebec City), at the Cultural Department of the City of Quebec and in the many (total or 40) museums of this world heritage city.

Semester 4

All students are requested to follow tutorial seminar and prepare their MA thesis at one of the five universities. In order to guarantee the best circumstances for writing the thesis, the TEMA+ Consortium recommends that students spend their last semester at the same partner university, where they spent Semester 2 and 3.
