Detailed Course Content

The course focuses on the contemporary history of Africa since the nineteenth-century major changes (the shift from slave trade to legitimate commerce, Islamic revival and jihad, state modernisation). Colonialism will be studied by examining the causes and phases of expansion, the military campaigns and diplomatic agreements, the administration and economic systems, colonial society. Finally decolonisation and nation-state building will pave the way to an investigation of post-independence conflicts.
