Some linguistic texts (Our Masters Voices Max Atkinson, Politics and the English Language, George Orwell, Aristotle's Rhetoric)
Some political speeches (I have a dream, etc.) from 20th century speakers.
Some linguistic notions will be applied progressively throughout the course so that students will appreciate the processes involved in the creation and delivery of political speeches.

Frontal lesson, pair and small groupwork, reading, translation and summary, video and listening exercises

Detailed Course Content
Some speeches by prominent 20th/21st century politicians: Tony Benn, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Theresa May and Winston Churchill. Studies of the social context of the various speeches and application of the critical methodology to their elucidation.
