Course Structure

Lessons are organised around lectures. Historical documents, newspapers, maps, photos and videos will be used during class activities.


Detailed Course Content

The course deals with the main events that affected North Africa and the Middle East since the birth of Islam to the modern era. After an introductory part on the basics of Islamic religion and institutions, the course will outline the history of the great caliphates and then delve into the Ottoman era. Particular emphasis will be laid on the nineteenth-century process of modernisation, European imperialism, nationalist movements, the birth of nation-states and contemporary conflicts.
