Learning Objectives
- WORLD ECONOMY: PRESENT ISSUES AND CHALLENGESThe aim is to develop students’ language abilities in three principle areas: reading, listening, speaking, as well as to encourage critical autonomous thinking about issues of relevance to students in this degree course. Through guided reading and discussion they will acquire appropriate lexis for discussing current issues in economics and politics, and develop the capacity to reflect on questions affecting the global context.
- GLOBALISATION: THE EVOLVING SCENARIOThe same general objectives of the first module are also followed here. This module is enriched by the addition of a comparative element; between east and west, between a consolidated model of liberal capitalism and one that is emerging, represented by the political and economic power of China.
Detailed Course Content
- WORLD ECONOMY: PRESENT ISSUES AND CHALLENGESThis course opens a window on the economic and financial crisis, through guided reading, translation and discussion in English texts dealing with a variety of economic, commercial and political, taken mainly by the magazine 'The Economist'. The lyrics deal with the causes of the crisis, the European experience (the case of Greece).
- GLOBALISATION: THE EVOLVING SCENARIO
In this second module the focus shifts eastwards, with discussions and readings on the role of China in the global economy, its political and economic traditions, and the relations that exist between China and the west.
