Knowledge of modernization, colonization and nation-state building  processes in contemporary Mediterranean Africa.

Course Structure

Lectures and student-based teaching. 

Required Prerequisites

Basic notions of history and geography.

Attendance is not compulsory but strongly recommended.

Detailed Course Content

This teaching course consists of two parts. Part 1 addresses Mediterranean Africa. Part 2 tackles specific topics: Middle East and North Africa, the wider Mediterranean, fragile democratization processes and persistent authoritarianism, the libyan crisis.

Learning Assessment

Learning Assessment Procedures

Attending students's knowledge is assessed via interaction in class and thematic presentations, individual or in groups. A list of appropriate readings to be presented in class will be circulated further on. 

Non-attending student will be orally examined.
