About me [I like staying up late and contemplating the silence of the night]
I am Associate Professor of Political Sociology in the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the University of Catania. I joined the department as a tenured researcher in 2007, after a PhD in Sociology (Catania, 1999) with a thesis on electoral abstention.
My work covers political and electoral participation, political communication and the European public sphere. Recent topics include election integrity, electoral campaigns, information disorders, gender and participation, and the links between mobility and voting behaviour. I am the author of Astensionismo (Mondadori, 2024) and Dentro la campagna (Bonanno, 2006), and co-editor with Hans-Jörg Trenz of Post-truth Politics and the Resilience of the Public Sphere in Europe (Routledge, forthcoming).
I hold the Jean Monnet Chair ELINE, Election Integrity for Inclusive Participation in a Resilient Europe (2026–2028), and I am the Italian lead of a Galileo project comparing abstention, migration and mobilisation in Italy and France, run with the Université Côte d'Azur. I recently led the Catania units of two national PRIN projects: POPSPHERE, on post-truth politics, and EPICI, on electoral participation and inclusive politics.
I teach Political Communication and Political Sociology. I have been on the faculty board of the PhD programme in Political Science in Catania since 2009, where I supervise doctoral students. Since 2023 I have also sat on the steering committee of the National PhD in European Studies at the University of Genoa. I have taught doctoral courses at the Universities of Genoa and Messina, at eCampus University and at the Université Côte d'Azur.
I sit on the editorial boards of Contemporary Italian Politics, Partecipazione e Conflitto and De Europa, serve on the editorial team of Comunicazione Politica, and am a member of the scientific committee of the book series Lessico democratico (Mondadori Università). I am also a member of the scientific board of ESA RN32 – Political Sociology.
