FRANCOPHONE STUDIES AND INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

Academic Year 2024/2025 - Teacher: Riccardo RAIMONDO

Course Structure

The teaching will take place exclusively in person. Students will be introduced to the study of the French language through the analysis and translation of documents in the original language (journalistic articles, videos, essays, European Union documents, etc.). The academic teaching will be supplemented by additional language practice sessions, thanks to the support of linguistic experts.

Required Prerequisites

The course is conducted entirely in French. An entry level of approximately A2/B1 is recommended. It is also recommended to attend the intensive French language courses offered free of charge by the University Language Center (CLA) starting from September 1st, as well as the French Language Practice Courses "Lettorati" offered by the DSPS.

Detailed Course Content

The objective of this course is to enhance students' linguistic and metalinguistic competencies in the French language while simultaneously broadening their understanding of Francophone cultures through political and intercultural lenses (target: Basic Operational Proficiency, approx. B2+/C1). The course is designed to facilitate an extensive exploration of linguistic variation and communication strategies across the Francophone sphere, employing Semiotic Discourse Analysis as the foundational theoretical framework for scholarly enquiry. Through the adoption of student-centred teaching methodologies across seminars, lectures, and workshops, the course aims to enable students to develop a critical analysis of diverse media (e.g. newspapers, political discourses, websites and social media, television, cinema, radio). This multidisciplinary approach endeavours to equip students with the analytical tools necessary to navigate and interpret the complexities of Francophone linguistic and cultural landscapes.
